Love to me was a fond companion, warmed my nights and my days
gave me the bounty of fine children, filled my life with loving ways,
but love can show another side like a winding road twist about
you never know what’s round the corner waiting to turn you inside out.
Don’t want to be in love that way
put up the barriers against the pain
don’t want to be in love that way again.
The object of my love was handsome strong enough to stand alone
I know it wasn’t his intention to leave me living on my own.
he would have given me the moon on a stick, laughed and said that’s ok
just like a dance love turns a trick comes towards you then turns away.
Don’t want to be in love that way
stay single for the rest of my days
don’t want to be in love that way again.
Love is like a blackthorn tree pretty in spring but carries a thorn
I loved him and he loved me I turned around and he was gone,
if I were to grow as tall as a tree put my feet deep in the soil
a love like that would uproot me, tears and sorrow along with the joy.
Don’t want to be in love that way
the hole in my heart will heal one day
don’t want to be in love that way again.
So I’ll be content to see the moon up in the sky on a starry night
ain’t gonna fall in love in June a broken heart by Yuletide.
Spring will come and summer will end autumn falls into winter snow
who knows what a year will send who knows how the wind will blow.
Don’t want to be in love that way
find the friends to keep me sane
don’t want to be in love that way again.
Don’t want to be in love way
stay single for the rest of my days
the hole in my heart will heal one day
find the friends to keep me sane
don’t want to be in love that way again.

When I watch the fulmars soar
on the cliffs above the oceans roar
I follow your print on the headland path
I feel your tread lightly on my heart.
The morning sun brings brief cheer
till I realize you’re not here
to share with me the day as it starts
but I feel you lightly on my heart.
Tears that run like a mountain stream
cut like a sword but bring release.
I know the key in the door is not yours
it’s not your voice when someone calls
but I know you’re near as I greet and laugh
I feel you lightly on my heart.
In tunes and songs and good company
I know you’re there to comfort me
you sit beside me as I sing and play
you walk within me every day.
And as the night descends and draws
it’s silken shadows around my thoughts
I gain the strength to drop my guard
I feel you lightly on my heart.

A wise man once said, and I think it is true,
‘Don’t speak out loud all that’s in your heart.’
Thoughts can be precious and spoken will bind,
sometimes I think my thoughts can’t be mine.
How can I leave this island of dreams
a light in the dark is not what it seems,
the sound of the waves a voice in the wind
how can I leave what makes my heart sing.
The thought of you takes my breath away
I can hardly say the words I’m thinking,
the thought of you takes my breath away
I want to turn and stay here beside you.
The pull of the ocean draws me to freedom
a hand on my shoulder is keeping me here,
if I open my heart I’ll be all the stronger
take my hand and I’ll stay on.
The thought of you takes my breath away
I can hardly say the words I’m thinking,
a thought of you takes my breath away
the thought of leaving now really scares me.
The thought of you

I like the thought that this song is a love/hate relationship with the
music industry. That ‘hit’ song is as tantalizing as unrequited love,
always just out of reach.

This song was the best of five that came out of an intensive week at
the ‘Song Writers Festival 2008’ at Bath Spa University. A productive
time spent working with a group of extremely talented people. I thank
Lucy Ray for help with editing and Boo Hewerdine for the line ‘And like
the evening light I’ll disappear'.
Forget your promise you’ll never keep it
the ties that bound us are worthless now
we knew we were in trouble when you stayed out all night
forget your promise and I’ll forget mine.
And when you read this note I’ll be out the door
and the words that we spoke
won’t matter anymore.
Forget your promise you’ll never keep it
the ties that bound us are worthless now
we knew we were in trouble when you stayed out all night
forget your promise and I’ll forget mine.
And like the evening light I’ll disappear
I was ready for a fight
but the price was too dear.
Forget your promise you’ll never keep it
the ties that bound us are worthless now
we knew we were in trouble when you stayed out all night
forget your promise and I’ll forget mine.

Hello baby, how'ya doing, I knew I’d find you in this place,
it’s been too long since we last parted I’ve really missed your loving face.
The last time we talked we both agreed I could only stay
till the crops were in
the travelling life is set in my bones you can’t leave your kith and kin.
You know I miss you while I’m away all I think of is your smile,
but I can’t change the way I am
so I’ve just come back to be with you for a while.
There will always be a time to leave the rolling hills and the red kite’s call
to stand at your door and call your name, hear your step across the floor.
When I lean my head against you feel the need in your loving ways
I wonder how I could ever leave you wonder if I could learn to stay.
But I live where you can’t join me out on the hills and over the styles
so take my love while we’re together
I’ve just come back to be with you for a while.
You tell me it’s hard to bear the pendulum of joy and pain
but it’s just a moment that passes in between we live again.
It may be when the fields are empty or when the corn is high
I’ll be there when you least expect me to hold you close and
hear you sigh.
Then if in time it comes to light that your life takes a turn
I’ll understand and go in peace knowing you don’t need me anymore.
Baby I miss you while I’m away all I think of is your smile,
but I can’t change the way I am
so I’ve just come back to be with you for a while.

Without a thought you stole my heart like a thief on the run
you packed your bags and made your escape with the last rays of the sun,
now in every room I walk I feel your presence there
it comes as quite a shock to me to know that I still care.
I wasn’t looking for your love it’s the old familiar tale
but still it’s a surprise to find just how hard I fell,
you gave your love so tenderly I thought that it was true
and now I find myself alone with a heart that’s broke in two.
Chorus
Stolen time my only crime stolen time
I’ve paid my dues for time spent with you.
Treat them mean and keep them keen has always been your rule
but treat them bad and keep them sad is closer to the truth,
you held my heart your prisoner then you threw away the key
if I ever meant a thing to you come steal some time with me.
You might have thought that I had asked for more than you could give
to fall in love would never fit with the way that we both live,
but you have laid the tender trap and I never will be free
don’t hold me in these chains of love come steal some time with me.
Chorus
Stolen time my only crime stolen time
I’ve paid my dues for time spent with you.
It’s four a.m. I’m alone again reminders all on view
your coat on the door a sock on the floor one abandoned shoe,
the time will come when I’ll do what’s right and end this misery
but till that day I know I’ll pay for your time spent with me.
So catch a train a car or a plane any wheels will do
come in disguise we’ll compromise as long as I see you,
you don’t have to lay your life on the line that was never meant to be
just pack a bag and be prepared to steal some time with me.

It kind of seemed to suit me to stay fancy free
you might as well try to chain a bird,
but lately I’ve been thinking I ought to settle down
so in calm or in gale, with my hand on the rail
I’m gonna’ be on the boat homeward bound.
Chorus
Boat homeward bound, boat homeward bound
in calm or in gale, with my hand on the rail
I’m gonna’ be on the boat homeward bound.
Stars for a guide, I’ve travelled far and wide
searching the world for a goal,
found comfort in the places where I’ve seen only strangers faces
but I’m willing to bet that all the folks that I’ve met
wish they were on the boat homeward bound.
Chorus
Boat homeward, boat homeward bound
I’m willing to bet that all the folks that I’ve met
wish they were on the boat homeward bound.
What joy are all the riches in America or the Indies
they all fade away at the thought
of walking in the woodlands south of the Chilterns
of the welcome in the kitchen from the folks that I’ve been missing
and the feeling on the boat homeward bound.
Chorus
Boat homeward, boat homeward bound
of the welcome in the kitchen from the folks that I’ve been missing
and the feeling on the boat homeward bound
So come and fill my glass I’m glad to be home at last
and long may I wish to stay,
but when I sit down and think of the money I’ve spent on drink
it’s well I took my leave when the tug on the sleeve
put me on the boat homeward bound.
Chorus
Boat homeward, boat homeward bound
it’s well I took my leave, when the tug on the sleeve
put me on the boat homeward bound.

Thanks to Mavis Daniels for the inspirational line ‘And though life slips away from us, like water through a sieve,’ and Doug Lang for his line ‘will yet be cold, by memories snowbound.’
How pleasant to hear the birds in the trees,
their song rises as life in my veins,
it’s more than a year since you left suddenly
and now the snowdrops bloom again,
the garden will wake the sun grow warm
bring forth shoots from the ground,
but I fear my heart will yet be cold
by memories snowbound.
Chorus
Mountains high and rivers deep
I’ll be part of the rise and flow,
moving forward shallow or steep
natures healing powers I know.
There’s many a thing that can heal a sorrow
gladden the heart and strengthen resolve,
to stand on a hillside and view the valley
or look deep in the petals of an old fashioned rose.
Eyes that are weak and tired with tears
can stop their weeping and dry once more
look to the stars bright and clear
and light on a path through another dawn.
Chorus
Some of these things I will keep in a pocket
when I spiral down under a blanket of woe,
I will open each thought as one opens a locket
and gaze on its beauty, as I loved you so.
And I know life slips away from us
like water through a sieve
but it fills a reservoir so deep
deeper than any life we live.
